  • Link in Bio

This is really great from Anil Dash: “Link In Bio” is a slow knife. This part really resonated:

But even in the very simple form that we’ve ended up with on the World Wide Web for the last 30 years, links are incredibly powerful, opening up valuable connections between unexpected things.

For a closed system, those kinds of open connections are deeply dangerous.

I’m seeing more “link in bio” posts on Instagram from artists and sentimental follows (like Zingerman’s Deli in Arbor). As my friends post more stories and fewer photos, these are the photos left in my feed. Subjectively, it feels less fun. Anil captures what’s wrong with the bigger picture.

  • ...should fix the problem

We have noticed a bug in iOS 13.2 which can completely lock the filesystem. A restart of your device should fix the problem.

Not what I wanted to hear from my favorite iOS word processor’s support team. I had stumbled into a bug that left me unable to edit, open, or create plaintext documents.

I grew up using Windows 3 and System 7. I have a higher tolerance for “shit happens, hit the save button” than most.

But after a month of rebooting my phone every couple days to edit plaintext documents, even I’m out of patience.

  • The Mandalorian

Two episodes in, I really, really like this show. It comes close to recreating that feeling I had watching A New Hope when I was eight.

On a side note, after being spoiled by binging new streaming shows, I kind of like Disney not dropping everything at once.

  • Year in Photos: Roses

My mother loves roses and I do, too. Someday I’ll have my own even if I never match her 100 neatly-planted rosebushes in my childhood backyard.

I stopped to take this picture while walking to the gym over the summer and I just had to send it to her.

  • Year in Photos: The Puget Sound

I took this picture from the top of the Smith Tower while catching up with two old friends.

  • Year in Photos: The Bench

This is my other favorite photo from the walk around Green Lake where I took the dock photo.

  • Year in Photos: The Dock

I took this not too long after getting my new iPhone. I took a walk around Green Lake in Seattle, WA to see what the camera could do. This is one of my two favorite shots from that walk.

  • Year in Photos: The Blizzard

Seattle got hit with the worst snowstorm in years last February, and I had a job that required me to be at work in the middle of it. I took this picture at my favorite bar after a really, really tough day.

  • My Year in Photos

I like taking photos and I always have. I’ve enjoyed reading a few pieces about photo composition over the years, and I like trying to apply what I’ve learned to my own pictures. That said, I’ve never owned a great camera.

Last year I bought an iPhone Xr and it’s the best camera I’ve ever owned. Having that in my pocket at all times has been a new experience and a lot of fun. I’ve shared a few of my favorites from the last year already, and I have just a few more to share.

  • Another Lake Photo

We’ve had some really lovely weather in Seattle lately and Green Lake is absolutely gorgeous this time of year.

  • The Lighthouse

One of the best movies I’ve seen this year, with some of the best cinematography I’ve _ever_ seen.

Willem Dafoe is a treasure. This is my first Robert Eggers movie and I can’t wait to see more. 4:3, B&W can be remarkably expressive in 2019.
